Center for Disease Control to Women: Prepare to Give Birth!

Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 10:45:22 PM PDT

by Sunsara Taylor

Not planning on getting pregnant? The Center for Disease Control (CDC) doesn't care. As far as they are concerned, if you are one of the 62 million women in the U.S. of childbearing age, you are pre-pregnant. A vessel. You are a future fetal incubator.

And, according to the CDC, the medical establishment, government, media and cultural crusaders should join in enforcing this state of pregnancy preparedness on you.

The Criminalization of the Public Square

Sun Jun 04, 2006 at 05:36:09 PM PDT

The dotcom generation has married the anti-war movement and produced a troubled child with serious identity problems. One moment he's claiming that Godwin's law has been suspended for the duration of George Bush's presidency. The next, probably after watching "The West Wing", he's pining after some imaginary middle of the road Republican he can go out and have a beer with.

What Is At Stake: A Series of Speakers on the Bush Agenda, June 5-9, NYC

Fri Jun 02, 2006 at 09:38:59 PM PDT

In early June, the World Can't Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime will be holding a series of events delving deeply into different aspects of the Bush Regime's crimes and the reasons that they must be driven out.  The banning of abortion and birth control, the attacks on science, the criminal negligence in the run-up to and aftermath of Katrina, and the role the Democratic Party is playing in relation to this Regime and in relation to the movement to drive it out.  These are issues and events that are challenging people's assumptions and shaking up the national debate.  These events coincide with our National Youth Organizer's Training in NYC and will be part of building for October 5th - a day of uncompromising mass repudiation of the Bush Regime and its program.

In response to George Bush's commencement address, a diverse coalition of anti-war and activist groups staged a protest in the neighboring town of Highland falls.

What it lacked in size, it made up for in diversity and spirit. The town was overwhelmingly friendly towards the protesters (of course there were still riot cops and the whole event was still videotaped for the local sherif's office).

Among the groups and individuals participating were:

Thoughts Upon Leaving the Darwin Exhibition

Mon May 22, 2006 at 12:02:34 AM PDT

The reason we all remember Darwin's name and not Wallace's, the reason why Charles Darwin is a world historical figure is the fact that he not only developed the theory of natural selection but documented it in a way so thorough, so meticulous, so well-ordered and in such overwhelming detail that to read Origin of Species and come away still thinking that the earth is only 6000 years old would be a bit like spending the day at the Uffizi and denying that there had ever been a Renaissance.

Let's Not Impeach the President

Thu May 18, 2006 at 10:39:47 PM PDT

By shying away from the impeachment issue because they believe that it will hurt them in the polls the way it hurt the Republicans for impeaching Clinton, the Democrats have proven to us that they don't trust the American people to distinguish between perjury over a blow job and getting us into a war that cost 100,000 innocent lives. You don't impeach because it will help you at the polls any more than you arrest a criminal because it makes you popular. What part of this don't the Democrats get?

A Carnival of Theocrats

The people behind BattleCry, veteran Christian youth organizer Ron Luce and his backers (who include Charles Colson, Ted Haggard, and Pat Robertson) don't like the America where I grew up. And it's more than just the separation of church and state.

A Review of Unembedded

Sun Apr 16, 2006 at 07:52:14 PM PDT

Kael Alford, the photographer, who has expressed some ambivalence about seeing this photograph published at all, is part of a stunning but often horrifying new book and traveling exhibit called "Unembedded". The exhibit, which is currently being displayed at the "Photographic Gallery" at 252 Front Street in lower Manhattan, features Alford's work as well as photographs by Thorne Anderson, Rita Leistner, and Ghaith Abdul-Ahad.

On the Immigrant Rights Protests and Driving Out the Bush Regime

Sat Apr 15, 2006 at 09:14:26 AM PDT

Over the last few weeks in an historic outpouring, millions have demonstrated in the streets across the country in opposition to the Sensenbrenner bill (H.R. 4437) and other proposed Congressional laws that would make felons out of the 11 to 12 million undocumented people in the U.S. and those who aid them in any kind of way.

Why is nobody opposing H.R. 310?
